200 Years Ago
- We learn that H. M. Hentz, Instructor in French in the Round Hill School in Northampton, has been chosen Professor of Modern Languages in Chapel Hill College, North Carolina.
- For sale, a woolen manufacturing establishment in Williamsburg village, seven miles from Northampton and nearly ready for operation. It is most advantageously situated for the application of water. The property will be sold at a very great bargain. Apply to Joseph Jenkins, Boston; Benjamin Clarke, Barre; or to Hervey C. Thayer, near the premises.
100 Years Ago
- Northampton took on a holiday appearance this morning with an extensive display of Old Glory in honor of Flag Day and the streets crowded with people from here and out of town to witness the 101 Ranch show’s parade. The flag display included the large number on poles in the new curbstone sockets
- For the first time in the history of Hampshire County, so far as court officials recall, a circus parade actually stopped Superior Court proceedings this morning. When the band began to play, Justice Nelson P. Brown announced that a recess would be taken, as it would be impossible to continue the session on account of the noise outside.
50 Years Ago
- The Northampton School Committee last night reduced next year’s budget by some $22,000 when it voted unanimously to delete funds for school breakfasts and authorized the purchase of a computer at a reduced price. Although the money has already been included in the 1977 fiscal year budget, it will not be spent and will go to the surplus account.
- Mayor David Cramer says that he will ask the City Council to vote to require all city employees, including teachers, to live within the city. As Cramer envisages it, the residency provision would not compel current city employees who are not Northampton residents to move to the city. New employees, or employees who seek promotions, though, would be required to move to Northampton within a year.
