New stop signs in front of Baystate cause traffic terrors

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) - A traffic alert out of Springfield to tell you about, you may have blown through a stop sign today — without even knowing. Two new stop signs were recently installed on Springfield Street, right in front of a Baystate Medical Center entrance.
Regardless of signs warning people about the new additions, the pattern is still causing chaos.
Car horns, chaos, and lots of confusion on Springfield Street on Friday as drivers navigated two new stop signs placed right outside one of the entrances to Baystate Medical Center.
Our cameras were rolling today and caught multiple drivers ignoring the stop signs — some not even seeing them. We even witnessed some drivers going around vehicles that abided by the new stop, resulting in several near accidents in just a short amount of time. All cause for concern especially so close to a hospital.
We’ve only been here for about twenty minutes on Springfield Street, and we’ve seen dozens of cars flying by these new stop signs right outside Baystate Medical Center. It’s not a simple adjustment for residents who have driven these streets for years, especially with trees shading over the signs, making them tougher to see. While residents in passing didn’t want to speak on camera, they made their feelings known.
It’s unknown at this time why the traffic pattern changed — but it’s definitely causing a lot of mayhem on the roads. We reached out to Springfield’s Department of Public Works and Baystate Medical Center, we have not heard back from either.
